InanewCOVID-19development,UNweatherexpertssaidonWednesdaythatthepandemicrisksdisruptingkeyforecastingservices,includingearlywarningalertsaroundtheworld.

Boththequantityandqualityofweatherobservationsandforecasts,aswellasatmosphericandclimatemonitoringareatstake,accordingtotheWorldMeteorologicalOrganization(WMO)inGeneva.

“WeareconcernedabouttheimpactasIsaidontheabilityofourMemberstodelivertheirbasicweatherandclimateservices…Andyoumaythink,whywouldwecareaboutthis,wehavebiggerthingstoworryaboutrightnow…Buteveninthissituation,therecouldbesituationswhereallofasuddenyoucouldbecriticallyreliantonweatherforecastingifahurricane,tornadoorsomeotheradverseweathersituationbreaksout.”

Manypartsoftheglobalweathermonitoringsystemareautomated,suchassatellitesandmanyobservationpointsonland.

Butothermonitoringpointshavealreadyseena“dramatic”impactoverthelastfewweeks.

Thisincludesreadingsfromairplanes,thankstoplummetinglevelsofairtraffic,particularlyinEurope.

Therehasalsobeena“significantdecrease”indatafromdevelopingcountries,wheremanyobservationsarestilltakenmanually,WMOsaid.

Inastatement,WMOSecretary-GeneralPetteriTaalasurgedGovernmentstosupporttheirnationalearlywarningandweatherobservingcapacitiesdespitetheCOVID-19crisis.

TheInternationalOrganizationforMigration(IOM)hassaidthatit’sworriedaboutthesignificantnumberofmen,womenandchildrenstillarrivinginNigerdespitetheemergencymeasures.

AsofTuesday,4peoplehavetestedpositivefornewcoronavirusinNigerthreehavedied.

Topreventvirustransmission,theauthoritieshaveimplementedborderclosures,curfewsandtravelbans,alongwithtwoweeksofquarantinefornewarrivals.

IOMisprovidingassistancebyhostingmigrantsinsixtransitcentres,andthreetemporarytransitsites.ThosearrivingattheborderwithAlgeriaarequarantined,andtwotransithousesinNiameyhaveopenedinresponsetothesuddenincreaseofmigrantsaffectedbytheborderclosures.

AtAssamaka,atNiger’sborderwithAlgeria,theagencyishelpingseveralhundredmigrantsastheyfinalizetheir14-dayquarantineperiod.
